The IIHF U18 World Championship is an annual event organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation for national under-18 ice hockey teams from around the world. The tournament is usually played in April and is organized according to a system similar to the Ice Hockey World Championships and World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The United States has tended to dominate the World Championships. Most countries send their best team to this tournament, however, Canada may not send its best players as in April some CHL junior teams are still involved in junior playoffs. Instead, Canada's top U18 players involved in junior or university playoffs in North America play in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August.
The Vancouver Giants recently announced that 2001-born defenceman Bowen Byram (Cranbrook, B.C.) has been named to Canada’s National Men's Under-18 Training Camp roster for the 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship in Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk, Russia, April 19-29.
It was a bumpy road, but Ontario Red completed the four-peat at the 2017 National Women’s Under-18 Championship. In the provincial gold medal showdown (Ontario Red versus Ontario Blue), Jacqueline Tam’s (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) power play marker in the second period would be the game winning goal as Red defeated Blue 3-1.
Team B.C. and Ontario Blue march into the 2017 National Women’s Under-18 Championship semifinals on Saturday undefeated. Winning just their second medal at last year’s nationals, Team B.C. will face off against the annual favourites to win Ontario Red — who have captured 10 of the 11 gold medals in the tournament’s history.
The Canadian Under-18 women’s team tripled the U.S. shot total but could not find the back of the net, losing the final match on Sunday of the three-game series.
The U.S. steamrolled the Canadian Under-18 women’s hockey team in the first period to earn a 4-1 win in the opener of a three-game series between the foes. The series kicked off on Thursday at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.
Team Canada ran their record to 2-1-0-0 at this year’s IIHF U18 World Championship with a 7-3 victory over Switzerland. The win gives Canada eight points in Group A play, one behind Finland (3-0-0-0). The teams will meet up on Tuesday, April 18, the final day of the preliminary round, with first place on the line.
It was exactly the start and result they were looking for. Team Canada began the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship in the best way possible with a solid 4-1 victory over Latvia as both teams played their first game in the preliminary round.
Team Canada will be looking at making history in Slovakia this April at the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship in Poprad and Spisska Nova Ves, Slovakia.
Canada is headed to the finals of the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship after defeating Sweden 6-2 in the semifinal on Friday.
