Dylan Strome has had a remarkable OHL career.

For those who follow junior hockey, that’s already well known, but it’s worth stating again after he set an Erie Otters franchise record in all-time points.

With four points against the Guelph Storm on Saturday, he now has 311 career points, two better than the previous Erie record of 309 set by Brad Boyes in 2002.

It’s also worth noting some of the current NHL stars he’s capable of reaching in terms of OHL career points.

According to eliteprospects.com, Strome ranks 79th all time in career points and has 21 games left to make a climb up the list. If he averages two points per game for the rest of the season, he’ll tie Jason Spezza for 26th overall. 

Spezza had 353 points in 228 games with the Brampton Battalion, Mississauga IceDogs, Windsor Spitfires and Belleville Bulls from 1998 to 2002.

In the meantime, Strome is just two points shy of Nashville Predators defenceman Ryan Ellis and five away from New York Islanders farmhand Michael Dal Colle.

There’s also a collection of players in recent OHL memory that Strome is capable of surpassing.

55. Bobby Ryan (Owen Sound Attack, 2003-07): 325 points in 249 games

Currently with the Ottawa Senators, Ryan caught scouts’ attention in Owen Sound before he was drafted second overall by the Anaheim Ducks, right behind Sidney Crosby in 2005.

Ryan returned to the Attack for two more seasons, recording 102 points in his final OHL season.

54. Wojtek Wolski (Brampton Battalion, 2002-06): 328 points in 253 games

Best known for his Red Tilson award-winning season in 2006, Wolski still holds the Battalion all-time scoring record by a wide margin.

He recorded 128 points in his final season and while he was drafted in the first round by the Colorado Avalanche in 2004 and had some good seasons with them, he became an NHL journeyman before moving onto the KHL, where he recently suffered a traumatic neck injury.

48. Max Domi (London Knights, 2011-15): 331 points in 244 games

Domi had the distinction of playing in three straight Memorial Cup tournaments (two as an OHL champion). He was also part of Canada’s 2015 World Junior team, the only Canadian contingent to win a gold medal in the current decade.

Domi is now emerging as a key part of the Arizona Coyotes’ future and is waiting for Strome to stay on board in the desert so they can form a potent combination.

43. Tyler Toffoli (Ottawa 67’s, 2008-12): 333 points in 252 games

Toffoli was a dangerous scorer with back-to-back seasons of more than 50 goals and at least 100 points during his OHL career. He tied for the OHL scoring lead in 2011 and finished second the following year. 

Toffoli quickly parlayed his OHL success to the NHL, becoming a Stanley Cup champion with the LA Kings in 2014 before surpassing the 30 goals in a season mark two years later.

34. Bryan Little (Barrie Colts, 2003-07): 342 points in 247 games

Barrie’s all-time leader in goals, assists and points, Little was a high NHL draft pick (12th overall in 2005) and has become a mainstay with the Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets organization. The Jets are starting to cut ties with its holdovers from the Thrashers era, but Little is part of that group and is still playing a prominent role with the club that doesn’t look like it will diminish any time soon.

26. Jason Spezza (Brampton/Mississauga/Windsor/Belleville, 1998-2002): 353 points in 228 games

The player with the most storied NHL career who’s within Strome’s reach, Spezza bounced around the OHL and made a clear impact at every stop along the way. He also played for Canada’s World Junior team on three occasions, became the Ottawa Senators’ all-time leading scorer with nearly 700 points and still plays a big role for the Dallas Stars now at the age of 33.
