The cream is starting to rise to the top of the 2017 OHL Cup with three teams sporting perfect 2-0 records.
There’s still two days of the round robin to be played and anything can happen but it’s better to have two wins than two losses at this point in the tournament.
It comes as no surprise that the No. 1 ranked London Jr. Knights (ALLIANCE) are undefeated. The Knights have been a Top Ten team all season and could be considered as the early tournament favourite to win the OHL Cup.
In their first two games, the Knights shut out the Toronto Jr. Canadiens 3-0 and then defeated the Mississauga Senators 4-2.
The GTHL Champion Mississauga Rebels came into the tournament ranked third and have a good chance to be around for the weekend playoff action and possibly Monday night’s final.
The Rebels ran their record to a perfect 2-0 with wins over the Quinte Red Devils 5-1 along with a narrow one goal victory against the Toronto Nationals 2-1.
But the Mississauga Reps (GTHL) can be considered a bit of surprise with their 2-0 record after they begin play with an Honourable Mention for the final Minor Midget rankings which were released a few days before the start of the OHL Cup.
They are proving that rankings don’t mean a thing once the puck is dropped and the action begins.
Give the Reps full marks for winning their first two games. They may have set the tone for the whole week with a confidence building 3-1 win over the Toronto Marlboros, who were ranked fourth coming into the event.
Historically, the Marlies have been a powerhouse at the OHL Cup, competing in the championship final on eleven occasions in the last twelve years.
The Reps went on to down Thunder Bay 3-2 to keep their record unblemished at 2-0.
As for the Marlies, their record currently stands at 1-1 after their first two games.
They will be looking to improve their chances of moving on to the playoff round starting with a game on Day 3 against the Eastern Ontario Wild (1-1).
On Day 4, they will meet up with the Thunder Bay Kings (0-2).
Round-Robin action continues Thursday with eight games on the schedule before wrapping up on Friday with 12 matches.
