Liam Lascelle has proven that he can be a rather reliable goalkeeper in the Central Canada Hockey League.

But it remains to be seen whether the Cornwall Colts’ 19-year-old puckstopper can also get the job done in the playoffs.

Lascelle is in his second season as the Number 1 guy between the pipes for the Colts.

He posted a record of 18-12-0-1 and a 2.87 goals-against average during his rookie campaign with the Cornwall squad a year ago. But the Colts placed ninth overall in the standings of the 12-team CCHL and missed out on a postseason berth by one spot.

As for this season, with just under two weeks remaining in regular season action, Lascelle and his teammates have already ensured themselves of some playoff participation. Thanks to their 37-13-4-3 mark, the Colts entered the week tied for second in the league standings with the Ottawa Jr. Senators.

Lascelle’s confidence is also soaring. He had registered a 26-10-3-2 in his first 43 appearances this season. And his GAA of 2.37 was third best among all CCHL goalies.

Despite being the Colts’ last line of defence, Lascelle is not concerned about his lack of playoff experience in the league.

“I don’t think I’m going to be fazed by that,” he said.

Besides, Lascelle said he has been through pressure-filled situations before. During his final Midget year, he was a member of the Cornwall-based Ontario Hockey Academy squad that advanced to its league championship, losing a Game 7 in overtime.

For the record, Lascelle does have a tiny bit of CCHL playoff experience. Back in 2014, when he was in the Midget ranks, he was a Colts’ affiliate player and saw action in seven regular season contests. He was then brought in for relief during one playoff match.

Lascelle ended up playing slightly more than nine minutes in that one postseason game, allowing one goal while making three saves in the process.

Lascelle also believes the Colts’ recent schedule has been preparing him adequately.

“With our schedule we have had quite a few, three [games] in four [days],” he said. “That kind of gets you ready for playoff hockey.”

So just how good has Lascelle been in recent months? Well, he’s only lost one game in regulation time since early December.

And the Colts have been managing to continue their winning ways recently even though they have been playing without their full regular lineup. A number of their top-scoring players have missed games due to injuries or suspension.

Barring any further mishaps, the Cornwall squad should have all of its regulars good to go come playoff time.

“We’ve been on a pretty good roll since December,” Lascelle said. “And we’re pretty confident right now. We think we have the team that is capable of going all the way and winning a league title.”
