Many things are happening off the draft floor and they see to be happening at a fast pace. The Chicago Blackhawks reacquired their 2011 second round pick Brandon Saad along with goaltender Anton Forsberg and a 2018 fifth round pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets for Artemi Panarin, Tyler Motte and a 2017 sixth round pick. This trade is interesting in a few aspects as Panarin has two years left on the bridge deal he signed prior to the 2016-17 season at a $6M cap hit while Motte is a former Michigan Wolverine and is currently in his second year of his entry level contract.

Saad has four years left at $6M cap hit while Forsberg is a restricted free agent. Saad was dealt to Columbus back in the summer of 2015 just weeks after winning his second Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks. It may appear that the Blackhawks need to fill the void down the wing vacated by high scoring winger Marian Hossa who will miss the 2017-2018 season due to a skin disorder which was caused by an allergic reaction to his own hockey equipment.

Just minutes after the Panarin for Saad deal, it was announced that the New York Rangers dealt Assistant Captain Derek Stepan and backup goaltender Antti Raanta to the Arizona Coyotes for New York's first round pick (seventh overall) and defenceman Anthony Deangelo. The Rangers now have cleared nearly $20M in cap space with 17 players and have two first round picks at 7th/21st. 

The Rangers could be looking at taking towering centreman Michael Rasmussen from the Tri-City Americans with their 7th overall pick to fill a big cap at depth down the middle and may look at drafting a defenceman with the 21st. If Kelowna defenseman Cal Foote is still around, maybe that's the direction they go.

It has been confirmed that ISS #17 ranked Eeli Tolvanen will not be attending Boston College in the fall due to failing admissions standards for the College. Tolvanen has played the last two seasons with the Sioux City Musketeers and now appears destined to either join the Oshawa Generals in the OHL who hold his CHL rights or he could sign right away with the NHL team that drafts him and begin next season in the American Hockey League. 

Teams do not appear done wheeling and dealing and it is expected to hear Gary Bettman at the podium tonight with his famous draft welcome and "We have a trade to announce..."
