The world's largest minor hockey tournament is once again complete after Esso Minor Hockey Week wrapped in Calgary and Hockey Calgary must be breathing a sigh of relief.

With more than 11,000 players, 650 teams, 2,600 coaches and 4,000 volunteers, the city-wide hockey fest is complete. 65 teams took home a prestigious banner to hang in their home rink, while 65 had to settle for silver.

In fact, with all involved, including fans and families, the Esso Minor Hockey week brought together more than 18,000 people, more than the populations of Camrose, Brooks and Canmore combined.

For the 47th year, the tournament ran and hockey parents around the city had to shift their calendars (if they weren’t already wide open) in case their child’s team won. Esso joined on as a sponsor nine years in and have been the name sponsor for 38 years.

The range of divisions is huge – from the tops in one age group to beginners in another, every team has a chance to win at the start and won’t be overwhelmed. There are 14 Novice, 14 Atom, 16 PeeWee, 12 Bantam, 13 Midget and three Junior divisions.

And every year, Hockey Calgary and Shaw TV host a vote – whichever division receives the most votes means the championship for that tier will be played on TV at WinSport’s elite Markin MacPhail rink. This year, it was Novice 2 North that got to play in the bright lights on Shaw, and the Saints 1 beat the Northwest Warriors 2 Red.
